A Fridge That’s Free for All Launched in London; Anyone Can Share or Take Food They Need

In Brixton, South London, a new project called “The People’s Fridge” is launched by a volunteer group to help the food poverty and minimize the food wastage in the country. This project joins the same campaign that was first launched in Germany, India, Spain and other cities in the United Kingdom.

In the European Union, more than 15 million tons of food are wasted every year. For that reason, a group of volunteers wants to spread a new concept where people can share the food they don’t need to those who want it. The project also encourages businesses to share not only fruits, vegetable, unopened packaged foods but even prepared meals to the community fridge.

As for homemade meals, uncooked meat and seafood, and milk that are opened, it had to be prohibited from the community fridge, according to Independent. This is because they want to minimize the issues of food spoilage and make sure that all the ingredients in all the food available are identified.

With this project, the volunteer group wants to see the good effect of diverting food wastage by creating a medium where everyone can donate food and others can take what they need, according to Huffington Post. “We say #foodsurplus rather than #foodwaste - Why? Because it's fit to eat, not waste!” said in a post on the project’s official Twitter account with over 1,000 followers.

As of today, photos of the project show many people are participating to the project’s aim, giving fresh produce, sandwiches, baby good, beverages, desserts and many other treats. The projects are situated in Pop Brixton and its employees help maintain the content it receives every day.

The people from the project encourages everyone to drop by and donate the food they don’t need any time in the day. They just need to register quickly and declare what they will donate and anyone can drop by to get any food they need. There are no requirements who can claim food from the fridge, all that the group asks is to not take food they are allergic to.
