New Survey Shows Vital Role of Design to NY Economy

The results showed that New York City has 65% more designers compared to other cities within the United States and there has been an increase in demand within the industry as employment increased to about 10% since the recession in 2008. Although employment dipped during that year, the results showed that the industry was quick to get back to its feet.

The statistical data in the architecture and design sector also showed that the professions are experiencing critical growth. In 2013, the city was host to 40,340 designers. Other cities which have a huge pool of full-time designers are Los Angeles and Chicago at 24,460 and 16,100, respectively.

Aside from architecture and interior design, other fields of design are also increasingly growing. In 2000, there were only 23,143 designers in the city but by 2010, the number increased 38,340. These designers are working in various fields, including but not limited to media, arts, advertising, retail, manufacturing, healthcare, real estate and financial sevices.

The number of designers in New York is also up significantly from 2010, when there were 38,340 designers, and 2000, when there were 23,143. These designers work not only at architecture and interior design companies, but in a wide variety of industries including the arts, media, advertising, healthcare, retail, manufacturing, real estate, and financial services.

In terms of areas within New York, Brooklyn and Queens having a higher growth in the establishment of design firms, Brooklyn grew to 149% in the rise of architectural firms while Queens’ architectural and interior design firms rose to a 63% and 61% increase, respectively.The survey is a part of a series conducted by the Center for an Urban Future in establishing the role that design plays in the economy of New York City. In 2011, they conducted Growth By Design, in 2012, they reported about Designing New York’s Future and in 2013, they published a report on NYC’s Design Sector.
