The Hefei 1953 Juxing Grain Post Shanghai Sanlian Bookstore, meticulously crafted by the talented team at SU Architects, stands as a remarkable fusion of rural heritage and contemporary design, marking a profound transition from the mere provision of physical sustenance to the enrichment of spiritual nourishment. Its strategic location within the serene landscapes of Mingchuan Township, Feixi County, nestled within the heart of Hefei City, positions it as a symbolic gateway to the JuXing Grain Post Cultural and Tourism Resort. Here, amidst the tranquil surroundings, the bookstore emanates a modest charm that harks back to the agrarian roots deeply embedded in the region's cultural fabric.

Embracing Tradition Amidst Transformation

Rooted in the rich history of agrarian civilization, the design draws inspiration from traditional granaries and rural landscapes. The original structure, dating back to 1953, posed a challenge with its deteriorating brick-and-wood mixed walls. To preserve its essence, a delicate balance was struck between conservation and innovation. A new steel frame structure was introduced to support the aging walls, symbolizing the coexistence of old and new. Meanwhile, a strategic removal of a portion of the wall and its replacement with a glass facade supported by wooden frames creates a visual dialogue between past and present, embodying the essence of temporality.

Illuminating the Ivory Tower

Transforming the once heavy and enclosed granary into an inviting space, SU Architects introduced a captivating feature - the "ivory tower." At the geometric center of the roof, a 1.5-meter diameter opening allows natural light to cascade into the interior. Beneath this luminous aperture, a tower-shaped space emerges, serving as a focal point where light converges, illuminating the surroundings. This ethereal tower not only enhances the spatial experience but also doubles as a functional element, housing books and serving as a communal reading area. Open to nearby elementary school students and town residents, it fosters a sense of community and inclusivity.

Mission Beyond Architecture

Beyond its architectural significance, the Hefei 1953 Juxing Grain Post Shanghai Sanlian Bookstore embodies a social mission. Grounded in the principles of "temporality" and "regionality," it reflects the evolving needs of rural communities over time. By adapting to changing usage patterns and incorporating diverse functionalities, the design transcends mere physical structures. It becomes a hub for cultural exchange, education, and community engagement, bridging the gap between past and present, tradition and modernity.

In reimagining the Hefei 1953 Juxing Grain Post, SU Architects have not only revitalized a historic structure but also redefined its purpose. Through meticulous preservation and innovative interventions, they have transformed a humble granary into a beacon of cultural heritage and social interaction. As rural areas grapple with the challenges of modernization, this project serves as a testament to the power of architecture in preserving traditions, fostering community cohesion, and shaping a sustainable future.
