The Antler-Inspired Architecture

In the frosty outskirts of central Kautokeino, Norway, a remarkable educational facility is taking form, blending seamlessly with the snowy landscape while drawing inspiration from the revered reindeer antler. Designed by the renowned architecture studio Snøhetta, Čoarvemátta is set to become a distinctive addition to the Sápmi region, housing the Sámi National Theater Beaivváš and Sámi High School and Reindeer Husbandry School. As construction nears completion, the studio has shared captivating images of the building, providing a glimpse into its unique design and cultural significance.

Set against a backdrop of snow-covered expanses, the angular and curving timber forms of Čoarvemátta are visible, resembling the innermost segment of a reindeer antler. This particular part of the antler holds special significance for the Sámi people, being a key material in gárraduodji, a traditional Sami handicraft involving crafting knives and similar tools. The building's design pays homage to this cultural practice and strives to harmonize with the natural landscape, avoiding sharp angles that would disrupt the surroundings.

The Symbolism Behind Čoarvemátta

"The ambition is a building blending into the surrounding landscape, avoiding sharp angles breaking with the landscape's natural shapes," explains Snøhetta. The design, inspired by the innermost joint of the reindeer horn, symbolizes various qualities and strengths while representing unity. The project's name, Čoarvemátta, derives from the Sámi words 'čoarvi' and 'mátta,' translating to 'horn' and 'root,' reflecting the close connection between the building and its cultural roots.

Once complete, Čoarvemátta will be enveloped in wood, mimicking a cloth from the outside and creating an interior reminiscent of a lavvu - a traditional temporary fabric dwelling used by the Sámi people. The heart of the building will serve as a central meeting point, branching out into different areas dedicated to reindeer husbandry and traditional Sámi handicrafts, fostering a cohesive space for cultural exchange.

The Goal of Cultural Solidification

The primary goal of this architectural endeavor is to strengthen the cultural position of both the Sámi National Theater Beaivváš and the Sámi High School and Reindeer Husbandry School within Norway. By consolidating all functions under a single, expansive roof and providing robust and spacious rooms, Snøhetta aims to facilitate synergies between the various elements: building and users, theater and school, and architecture and landscape.

Commissioned by the Norwegian Governmental Building Agency in June 2021, Snøhetta collaborates with 70°N Arkitektur, contractor Econor, and Sámi-Norwegian architect Joar Nango, known for his nomadic library exhibited at the Venice Architecture Biennale. Together, they are weaving a structure that not only stands as a testament to architectural prowess but also embraces and perpetuates the rich cultural heritage of the Sámi people.
