Ryuichi Sasaki Architecture, one of the most cutting-edge architecture firms in the Tokyo area, has recently presented a spectacular realization model for a residential complex that can change the philosophy of urban living in the Tokyo metropolitan area, Japan's most populous city. Having left the conventional ways, they settled for a new structure named Cuadro Nakano North, and this structure stands out among them as proof of their creative solutions to space challenges and resource management in housing construction.

Innovative Design and Location

Strategically situated within walking distance from Nakano Station in western Tokyo, Cuadro Nakano North occupies a compact site measuring 4.7 meters wide and 14 meters deep. Despite the limited space, the 176-square-meter building elegantly accommodates three residential units and parking, showcasing the ingenuity of its design.

Collaboration and Sustainability

In a collaboration between Kiz Architects and Hidetaka Gonai/Escenario, which are led by Ryuichi Sasaki, the current house has been carefully created to be carbon-neutral, utilizing mainly natural energy sources besides another priority of making the home comfortable to live in. The building that was done in Fall 2022 is constructed out of predominantly reinforced concrete, which communicates sustainability and durability in this form through its design ethics. The central atomic structure of Cuadro Nakano North is a snail staircase that rises on the top of the building, connecting four levels. Hence, vertical space and function are well-taken. As functional steps and display storage, the staircase adds a dynamic element to the living spaces, enhancing their visual appeal and functionality.

Versatility and Compact Design

Moreover, the top floor of the building features a versatile workspace counter atop the staircase, catering to the growing demand for remote work in today's society. To address the challenge of limited space, the building elegantly elevates on the eastern side, creating a compact piloti that accommodates two parking spaces while allowing for potential recreational use. Stepping inside, occupants are greeted by minimalist interiors characterized by a unified color scheme of white fixtures, fittings, and lighting, complemented by concrete and white walls. This design approach creates an uncluttered and refined ambiance, promoting a sense of serenity within the bustling urban environment.

Cuadro Nakano North prioritizes sustainability through the use of high-performance airtight windows, which facilitate natural ventilation and lighting and thereby minimize the need for artificial cooling systems. Additionally, linear lighting enhances the sophisticated urban atmosphere, while the inclined top-floor walls create a captivating interplay of light and shadow, expanding the perceived space and enriching the overall living experience.

Cuadro Nakano North is a shining example of innovative architectural solutions in the face of urbanization challenges. By reimagining compact spaces and embracing sustainability, Ryuichi Sasaki Architecture has not only addressed the housing needs of modern Tokyo but has also set a new standard for urban living that transcends geographical boundaries.
