Holzer Kobler’s Trailblazing Approach to the Architectural Grid at Erlebnis-Hus

In the realm of architecture, the architectural grid serves as a foundational framework guiding the creation of spaces and shaping experiential qualities within a design. Often perceived as a simple representation system, the grid can sometimes limit creativity, leading to unimaginative outcomes. However, Holzer Kobler, an architecture practice renowned for its innovative approaches, challenges this notion with their design for Erlebnis-Hus, a tourist center in the picturesque seaside province of St. Peter-Ording, Germany.

Exploring Endless Possibilities

At first glance, Erlebnis-Hus appears governed by a regular wooden grid, a nod to local pile construction techniques. Yet, Holzer Kobler's decision to expose and embrace this grid unveils a world of endless possibilities. The main building, framed by a wooden structure composed of regularly sized supports and cross-laminated timber beams, is a testament to this architectural element's potential. Surrounding the building are whimsical additions such as a snakelike slide, swings, and a miniature skating setup, transforming the space into an oversized playground. This integration of playful elements enhances the visitor experience but fosters a sense of community and engagement within the region.

Designed as part of a landscape development project in collaboration with landscape architect Uniola, Erlebnis-Hus is a multifunctional hub catering to visitors of all ages and backgrounds. The architects aimed to create an inclusive meeting point deeply rooted in the local context while exuding a strong regional identity. This emphasis on regional identity is evident in the choice of materials and construction techniques, which reflect the surrounding environment and cultural heritage.

Cohesive Interior Design

The interior of Erlebnis-Hus is characterized by five wooden cubes inserted within the grid, each serving a distinct purpose ranging from an analog game venue to a restaurant and information center. Despite their functional diversity, these cubes maintain a cohesive design language, seamlessly blending with the surrounding landscape. Using local and resource-efficient materials further enhances the project's sustainability credentials, aligning with the architects' commitment to innovation and ecological responsibility.

Probably the most distinctive feature of Erlebnis-Hus is the vast number of terraces. One can unroll the carpet of his vision and stretch it with the horizon of the natural landscape. The terraces and steps in different finishes that facilitate movement are recreational features that inspire curiosity and a relationship with the built environment. Furthermore, a primary reinforced concrete core encloses this with an elevator to provide universal access. Therefore, all users would universally like and prefer the space.

Empowering Social Growth

As for the project's brief, architects put an accent in front of the competition of the ideas of being the environmentally friendly, innovative, and tourism-attractive solution. The approach they would like to recommend will empower all the factors toward achieving social growth. The architectural grid as a design principle is the thing that Holzer Kobler infused the design with and, in this way, enabled it to become precisely what it is. Grid plays a double role, being a border and the spark for imagination. Thus, Hus-Erlebnis transformed into a venue where families could rest and kids could have fun.

To this end, Erlebnis-Haus is the architectural manifestation of ideas that, when built and executed in a way, understand the site and the surroundings and have paradigm outcomes. By introducing their spatial planning for the architectural grid, Holzer Kobler has uncovered new opportunities for space designing, providing a less calculating, joyful, and inspirational space. While visitors become part of the ergonomic environment in Erlebnis-Haus, they find themselves reminded of the unlimited potencies hidden in architectural design grids. With the creative Paris, the following architectural design adventures become natural to them.
