Samsung Galaxy S5 Price Slashed By Best Buy With New Trade-In Offer

Best Buy has your best interest with their new Galaxy S5 deal.

The retailer will offer a $100 trade-in gift card for customers who bring in a working smartphone for trade from May 18 to May 31 as part of a new promotion.  Furthermore, Verizon subscribers can slash the device's price down to just $50, as the carrier will offer an additional $50 off after the $100 Best Buy deal.

The deal, which applies to the AT&T, Sprint and Verizon S5 models, will only grant consumers a $50 gift card if they purchase the smartphone on a two-year contract online, however.

Best Buy notes that smartphones eligible for trade-in must power on and feature no water damage or cracks on the screen.

The S5, which features the "best performing smartphone display" ever tested by DisplayMate, features a 5.1-inch screen, 16-megapixel camera, a fingerprint scanner and is waterproof.

Though the next-generation S5 still carries the plastic casing as its predecessors, consumers will be pleased to hear that it is both waterproof and dust-proof-taking on the capabilities packed into the Galaxy S4 Active smartphone.

Specs for the device include a 2.5-GHz processor that is faster than the Galaxy S4's 1.6-GHz Samsung chip and 1.9 GHz Qualcomm chip processors. Samsung declined to specify whether the S5 features a 64-bit that can handle graphics-heavy downloads, according to The Wall Street Journal. The 64-bit processor recently debuted in rival Apple's iPhone 5S smartphone.

Despite some enticing design changes and specs, the smartphone's thick body and heavy weight is not going to win many consumers over. The Galaxy S5, which weighs in at 145 grams and is 8.1 millimeters thick, is both heavier and thicker than its predecessor, the Galaxy S4, which is 130 grams and 7.9 millimeters thick. Apple's iPhone 5S flagship is also slimmer at 7.6 millimeters thick and weighs in much lighter at 112 grams.

The smartphone, which is available in black, white, gold and blue, features an organic light-emitting diode display and a a 5.1-inch screen, which is larger than the 4.99-inch Galaxy S4, but features the same screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels despite the increase in screen size. The 1920 x 1080 resolution is also known as full HD.

The Galaxy S5 also features a better camera than its predecessor, launching with a 16-megapixel camera equipped with ultra-high definition 4K video recording capability. The 16MP camera is a step up from the Galaxy S4's 13MP, which could already take high-resolution photos.

Other key specs include a heart rate sensor, which has been rumored to debut in Apple's iOS 8, 16GB and 32GB storage options, with an option to expand to 64GB via a microSD card, mobile wallets support and Android KitKat.
