The world's largest rooftop farm in Brooklyn celebrated a successful first growing season with a really cool time lapse video.
Brooklyn Grange, which also has a smaller farm in Queens, is a leading force in New York's growing urban farm industry. Their largest (and the world's) rooftop farm is 65,000 square feet and several stories above the Brooklyn Naval Yard.
Profitability is tough, since the farm faces many obstacles others don't. Soil contaminants, water availability, and changes in climate and atmospheric conditions can be more prominent in an urban environment. But the farm is breaking even, according to the Huffington Post.
According to a Columbia University study examining the potential of urban farming in New York City, tours and special events are cited as one of the reasons behind their relative success. Brooklyn Grange has hosted a many of both at the farm.
Below is the time lapse video of the farm's construction by by filmmaker Christopher St. John.
