US Olympic Museum’s Design Unveiled

The preliminary designs for the US Olympic Museum which will be built in Colorado Springs has been revealed, Architectural Digest reports. The 60000-square-foot compound, designed by New York-based Diller Scofidio+Renfro, is dedicated to the achievement of the United States in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The proposal shows that of two twisting structures forming a large atrium surrounded by galleries and public areas. The facility will boast of interactive exhibitions showcasing the rigorous regimen that athletes go through as well as a U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. Other amenities include an auditorium, café, gift shop and a broadcast studio. The series of spaces will usher guests into a gallery on the top floor with a view of Pike’s Peak.

In a statement reported by AD, Diller Scofidio+Renfro principal said, “Inspired by the movement of the athletes, the US Olympic Museum spirals up and outwards from a central atrium, drawing the public in at its base and propelling them up through the galleries.”

Diller added that the twisting structures will frame a new public plaza and “extends a new axis to the America the Beautiful Park West.” This new plaza complex will be a 12-hectare national park developed within the city. Low rise stairs working as bleachers will serve as a connection between the public plaza to the US Olympic Museum

Museum officials have been raising funds to achieve their $80 million goal to construct the project. According to Archinect, the organizers have already garnered around $42million. Nor’wood Development Group has also donated 1.7 acres of land and has already finalized the land gift agreement with museum officials.

The US Olympic Museum is estimated to break ground in the spring of 2016. The museum is slated to open two years after, just before the 2018 Winter Olympic Games which will be held in PyeongChang, South Korea.
