A Look at Green Designers for Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day, let’s take a look at some of today’s designers, events and retailers that have made a dedication to create a sustainable living environment one home or building at a time.

Darren Mercer Interiors
The Manchester-based design company Darren Mercer Interior has been making waves within the sustainable design community. Recently, the company introduced their new eco-friendly policy wherein they will be working on ten interior design projects which are made from 100% recycled materials this year. The company has also made it to a point wherein they will provide sustainable design features to clients at no additional costs.

Darren Mercer said, “As interior designers, we’re fully aware that energy used and wasted in dwellings, office buildings and commercials spaces has played a large part in the damaging of the environment.”

Sheri Koones
Sheri Koones has recently published a book called “Prefabulous World: Energy-Efficient and Sustainable Homes Around the Globe”. The book is a great guide for those in the profession to explore the possibilities of prefabricated homes which can help save time, energy, and costs for the homeowners during and after its construction.According to Koones, “There is a growing concern for the rising cost of energy and the political/ environment ramifications of obtaining it.” Koones strongly encourages designers, architects, contractors, engineers, builders and homeowners to build prefab as this is the best way to conserve resources.

Sustainable Furnishings Council
The Sustainable Furnishings Council is an organization that advocates sustainable practices for designers, manufactures, consumers and retailers. They also encourage those in the profession to become members wherein they can attend lectures and events that will broaden their knowledge and understanding of ecological design. From June 13 to June 14, the Sustainable Furnishings Council will be holding their annual conference titled “SFC Next” in Washington D.C. For this year’s conference, they will focus on topics concerning sustainable products that can be used within interiors.
