The recently concluded International Interior Design Association’s (IIDA) Library Interior Design Awards gives a glimpse as to what the future of library interior design is. From the looks of it, it’s also moving towards a design-forward future that pushed the boundaries of design.
Cheryl S. Hurst, IIDA Executive VP and CEO said, “With the function of library spaces continually being reshaped and retooled to align with shifting end-user needs and advancing technologies, design in library interiors must evolve quickly and creatively.”
Along with the American Library Association (ALA), IIDA awarded Lee H. Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership and 1100 Architect with the Best of Competition winner in the 2014 Library Interior Design Award. The winning design was for the Queens Library project in Jamaica, New York. The celebration and ceremony was held during the ALA Annual Conference and Exhibition in Las Vegas last June 29, Sunday.
Other contenders for the awards include The Glenmore Christian Academy Library, Calgary, CA; The Claire T. Carney Library, Boston; the Odegard Undergraduate Library, Seattle; Midland Centennial Library, Midland, Texas; Julia Ideson Building, Houston; James B. Hunt Library, North Carolina State University and the City Library in Seinajoki, Finland.
The panel of judges for the 2014 Library Interior Design Awards included Christy Cain (IIDA, RID, LEED AP BD+C, Senior Associate at Perkins+Will), Jessica Kayongo, J.D., M.A. Anthropology & Interim Social Librarian at the University of Notre Dame, Stasia Czech, (IIDA, Senior Associate and Interior Designer at NBBJ), and Richard Waters, MLS (Principal Consultant at Godfrey’s Associates, Inc.).
The Library Interior Design Awards is a biennial event which recognized the excellence in library interior design within an international scale. It aims to seek designs that exemplify excellent aesthetics, creativity, function, and satisfaction from the client’s objectives.
