An Ode to Cultural Richness

Craftsmanship in the Northeast
The Bamboo Northeast Pavilion debuted against the backdrop of the Surajkund Craft Fair, an annual extravaganza devoted to promoting artisanal talent and showcasing Indian handicrafts. Located near the well-known Surajkund Lake in Faridabad, the pavilion pays tribute to the rich cultural legacy of the eight states in the Northeast, where native arts and crafts thrive in beautiful environments.
Preserving Craftsmanship Amidst Challenges
Fundamentally, the pavilion honors the long-standing custom of bamboo craftsmanship practiced throughout the NER. Motivated by the culture there, atArchitecture set out to bring together craftspeople from every state, utilizing their knowledge to create the pavilion. Even though finishing the structure in the allotted 60 days was extremely difficult, the project turned out to be a masterpiece of teamwork and craftsmanship.
The idea of integration with nature is central to the Bamboo Northeast Pavilion's design concept. The open and permeable design of the pavilion embraces the surrounding flora, blurring the lines between the natural and built environments. The soft sound of falling leaves and the soft light streaming through the bamboo slats welcome guests as they stroll through the building's hallways.
Central to the pavilion's layout are eight courtyards, each a nod to the unique heritage of a different NER state. These tranquil sanctuaries showcase indigenous handlooms, offering glimpses into centuries-old weaving traditions. From the vibrant hues of Assamese silk to the intricate patterns of Manipuri textiles, each courtyard is a testament to the region's artistic prowess.
Drawing inspiration from the circular footprint of Surajkund, the courtyards intersect with the pavilion's hyperbolic roof at varying heights, mirroring the undulating terrain of the NER. Semi-open galleries within each courtyard frame picturesque vistas of the surrounding landscape, inviting contemplation and reflection.
Amidst this symphony of bamboo and foliage, the central courtyard emerges as a sanctuary of serenity, representing the verdant hills of Meghalaya. Here, an open sky-facing pool serves as a tranquil oasis, offering respite from the bustling fairgrounds. Throughout the pavilion, century-old trees stand as silent sentinels, their presence a poignant reminder of the site's rich history and natural splendor.
