Canadian Design Firm Yabu Pushelberg to Receive an IIDA Star award

Canadian interior design firm Yabu Pushelberg is to become a recipient of the prestigious International Interior Design Association Star Award.

The duo will be presented with the award on June 8 during the IIDA Annual Meeting which will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. The IIDA Star Award is given to an individual or an organization which has proven its influences in the design industry and the community.

IIDA executive vice president and CEO Cheryl Durst said that Yabu Pushelberg’s contribution to the interior design industry is greatly appreciated and that the firm has been thoroughly committed in providing innovative and high-quality works in the field of hospitality and retail design. Durst said, “Because of this demonstrated commitment and its far-reaching impact elevating the profession worldwide, we are pleased to honor and celebrate Yabu Pushelberg as this year’s Star Award recipient.”

Yabu Pushelberg was established in 1980 by George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg. The firm started out in Toronto and branched on to New York and China, specializing in hospitality and retail product and interior design.

From then on, the Canadian design company had been receiving awards year after year, including the James Beard Foundation Award for Excellence in Restaurant Design, Platinum Circle Award, and the Best of Competition Honors in the IIDA Best of Asia Pacific Competition. The firm has also received the Order of Canada which is considered as the highest design award in the country.

George Yabu, co-founder of Yabu Pushelberg said, “With all the media attention that it’s possible to receive in our modern world, it’s clearly more profound and meaningful when that recognition comes from your peers in the profession.” He adds, “It’s the most satisfying accolade we could ever get.”

Past IIDA Star Award recipients include the National Design Museum at the Smithsonian, Charles and Ray Eames and Cooper Hewitt.
