1100 Architect Recreates University of Pennsylvania 1851 Cottage into a Modern Structure

Last September 2016, University of Pennsylvania's circa-1851 cottage was turned into a stunning modern architecture. 1100 Architect is behind the amazing transformation, the new structure is now a renowned student center.

According to Arch Paper, Robert D. Work bought the Gothic Revival cottage then architect Samuel Sloan made it into an amazing cottage in 1851. Time flew until it also became one of the University of Pennsylvania's Perry World House part.

The first architectural features of Work's cottage has fake limestone gearing to look like a French chateau in Suburban Philadelphia. When 1100 Architect stepped into the transformation of it, the firm made sure that it will have real limestone blocks now.

"The project presented the challenge of putting history adjacent to modernity in the bluntest and direct way," said the co-founder of 1100 Architect David Piscuskas. Seemingly, "Limestone" isn't only design for the place, it also connotes rich background.

Dezeen also shared interesting information regarding the sleek modern University of Pennsylvania's Student Center. As stated by 1100 Architect, the place will be the home of many global engagements hence it needs to exist with flexibility.

1851 cottage is now a three-storey building that has modern design themed after flexible interior scheme. 1100 Architect also made the place adjacent to World Forum, an area where 150 people can freely express their thoughts.

"The inter-disciplinary nature of the building's program led to the creation of vast networks of sight lines, within the building and between the interior and exterior," the firm explained. The place's leaned on the theme of functionality and beauty.

To take note, it's not only the outside part of the building that was put in mind; the inner look of it was also given importance. 1100 Architect used simple color palettes with metal and wooden accents for its walls. Then it finished everything with a floor stone much like the one outside.
