Embroidered Upholstery: A New Trend in Furniture

During New York Design Week 2014 , a lot of trends emerged. While some have already been seen at previous design events, others seemed fresh.

Two examples of this would be the embroidered furniture pieces as exhibited by design team, Rococo and also from Volk Furniture.

Rococo created a grey sofa with its entire backrest showcasing an expansive pattern of floral stitches. It was made in collaboration with non-profit organization Hilando Mexico and was created with the help of the crafting skills of indigenous women in the Yucatan region of the country.

Rococo designer Eduardo Dubost said of its design, “It’s less predictable to embroider a sofa than a pillow.”

Brooklyn-based design groups Volk Furniture and Coral & Tusk also collaborated with a design project which produced whimsical pieces in their NY Design Week exhibit. The team created a quirky credenza with fabric doors embroidered with Indian-inspired patterns. The same patterns were used in a circular stool.

Volk Furniture designer Brian Volk Zimmerman said, “Both Stephanie and I have a love of Wes Anderson, a certain tongue-in-cheek thing.” Zimmerman said he and Stephanie Housley of Coral & Tusk “wanted to surprise people.”

New York Design Week is a New York City’s official design event that is celebrated all throughout the city. It was inaugurated in 2013 and includes a varied program of design exhibits, trade shows, design talks and lectures, installations and open studios.
