Nestled amidst coconut plantations and native vegetation in the serene landscape of northern Kerala, the Screen-The Lantern House stands as a beacon of architectural innovation and tranquility. Designed by Zero Studio, this residence is not merely a structure but an entity that harmonizes with its surroundings through a respectful and subtle approach to design.

The Concept of Screening

In a setting characterized by calm and tranquility, the architects adopted a sensitive approach to alter the landscape without intruding upon its natural beauty. The house is conceived as a screen, delicately filtering the built environment from the unbuilt. Its external facade serves as a shield, seamlessly integrating with the context while allowing for a play of light and air. Lined with a layer of landscape on the inner periphery, the facade filters light and noise and brings in fresh air, creating a serene and comfortable environment.

Symbolism in Architecture

Metaphorically representing a lantern, the house's external envelope shields and enhances its inner core's beauty. By night, the facade illuminates, revealing the light and function within. This symbolism underscores the dual purpose of the facade, both protecting and glorifying the inner spaces of the house.

A Monolithic Form

The design follows a clean, straightforward elevation, presenting a monolithic form to the observer. Windows and doors are seamlessly integrated into the facade, maintaining the unity of the design. Visitors are welcomed into the house by a large volume that is aesthetically pleasing and seamlessly integrated into the surrounding environment. The bedrooms remain private and have unobstructed views of the verdant surroundings thanks to the absence of walls.

Personalized Spaces within a Common Volume

Designed for a family of four, the Screen-The Lantern House caters to the needs of its inhabitants with personalized and intimate spaces within a shared volume. From a floating deck by the living area to a reading space in the stair landing, each corner of the house is designed to evoke varying moods and experiences. Private balconies, terrace planters, and bay windows create opportunities for relaxation and contemplation, allowing the users to celebrate the wholesome experience of 'homecoming.'

Uncluttered Interiors

The house's interiors have a minimalist design, with open floor plans and muted finishes that heighten the openness and tranquility. The finish color scheme is selected to maintain an air of simplicity while blending in with the surrounding natural environment. This design approach fosters a connection with nature throughout the house by ensuring a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

In the Screen-The Lantern House, Zero Studio has created more than just a house; it's a peaceful, harmonious haven that perfectly blends in with the surrounding natural environment. With thoughtful design and exacting attention to detail, the architects have created a place where architecture and landscape converge, offering its occupants a peaceful retreat. Immersed in the sense of 'homecoming' throughout their beloved house, the family finds comfort and joy in the embrace of their ancestral land during annual gatherings for holidays and momentous occasions.
