Van Gogh’s ‘Head of a Woman’ Sold to Dutch Museum for a Record Price of $9.34 Million

One of Vincent Van Gogh's artworks found a place in the Dutch Museum with a record $9.34 million (€8.6 million) price.

Hailing from Netherlands, the Noordbrabants Museum took bough the 1885 Head of a Woman (Gordina de Groot) piece from an auction winner.

As reported by ART News, the Head of a Woman was owned by an art dealer from London who purchased it during Christie's auction in 2023. With its almost $10 million value, it's one of the most expensive van Gogh works that have been acquired by a museum or an institution.

Initially, Noordbrabants was hoping to bid for the van Gogh painting at the time but dropped out as the price rose. The art dealer, Daniel Katz, was able to take it home for his private collection at approximately $6.3 million. He later agreed to loan it to the Dutch museum after being approached by its curator and director.

Since 2016, Noordbrabants Museum has purchased about five Vincent van Gogh artworks with six more on loan. They have been constantly on the radar for the Head of a Woman since then and has even launched a fundraising campaign called 'The Mona Lisa of Brabant.'

The painting has been on display in the Dutch museum since January and will be part of their larger plan to expand the van Gogh collection, including opening a dedicated wing by 2026.
