Samsung to Unveil Its Gear VR at IFA 2014 Conference
For all those wondering what Samsung's virtual reality headset will look like, it's time to stop wondering. Sources say that when it is announced at IFA 2014 this year, it will look like what is pictured above. The picture is straight from Samsung.
While the exact look of the tech is unknown, it is confirmed that it is very similar to the photo. The render is probably a closer target to the retail model than the developer kits currently being tested in public. Yet, Samsung has yet to tease us with the headset.
The headset will be used in conjunction with your phone, which plugs through the USB and can act as a screen. The hardware is built by Samsung. The software is built by Oculus Virtual Reality, the same people who built the well-received Oculus Rift.
Sam Mobile said the headset, which will be showcased at IFA is named "Gear VR", like Samsung's wearable gear. The Gear VR will have a touch pad along the right side of it, and it will help solve the issue of interaction within the headset's Oculus VR-built software.
Samsung will make the headset's software development kit available soon after it is announced, before Oculus VR's first dev conference.
According to SamMobile, a part of the Samsung Apps will be dedicated to the Gear VR. This is similar to how some apps are dedicated to the Gear smartwatch software. Apps like Theatre, 360 players and Gallery will be available for the headset, and Samsung will also open an SDK for apps created by third-party developers for the Gear VR.
It is unknown how similar the experiences between the Oculus VR and Gear VR will be but it may not take long to compare as Oculus' first developer conference happens right after Samsung's IFA.
