Samsung Galaxy Alpha To Pack 4.7-inch Display: Smart Move vs. iPhone 6?

In what appears to be a thinly veiled shot at the upcoming iPhone 6, the latest Galaxy F/S5 Prime or Galaxy Alpha (this device has too many monikers!) rumor suggests the Samsung premium smartphone will pack a 4.7-inch display, just like the next iPhone offering.

Instead of releasing another flagship with a 5-plus-inch screen, the Korea Herald (via IntoMobile) reports that Sammy is planning on going smaller to give it a clear comparison vs. Apple. The Galaxy Alpha is also being tipped for a 6mm-thin body. Previous leaks have suggested that the iPhone 6will be similarly thin.

Furthermore, according to ETNews, the device will debut on Aug. 13, suggesting the premium smartphone will beat out competitor Apple's unveiling of its new, larger iPhones. The publication adds that the Galaxy Alpha will pack a metal body that looks like a cross between the the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note and will be aimed vs. the flagship competitors the LG G3 and iPhone 6.

Leaker @evleaks previously offered up what he claimed to be a press render of the Galaxy Alpha.

While the image kicked back up speculation that the smartphone will feature a heart-rate sensor, GSMArena notes the image could be photoshopped, as the website claims it looks "suspiciously like last month's "perfect gold" shot."

Phandroid reports that the device has passed through the FCC with the model numbers SM-G906S, G906K, and G906L, simultaneously revealing its dimensions, as well. According to the FCC paperwork, the smartphone measures 72.5mm x 142mm: identical to the current flagship GS5. As the website notes, the device is rumored for a 5.2-inch display, so it will be intriguing to see how it would incorporate the larger display in the same body.

Earlier benchmark results found on GFXBench, similarly suggest the Galaxy Alpha features a 5.2-inch display with QHD resolution (2,560×1,440 pixels) - making it a bit larger than the standard GS5, but with twice the resolution. Additional specs listed for the device include a 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor (that GS5 packs a 801), a 16-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing shooter.
